Into the Hoods: Remixed

ABOUT THE SHOW

Once upon a time in a land far, far away, two children ran away in search of freedom but found themselves lost… in the hood.

Welcome to the Ruff Endz Estate: home of vinyl-spinning DJ Spinderella and vivacious rapper MC Rap-on-Zel, who’s caught the eye of D-list reality TV celebrity Prince. Lil Red, a singer newly signed to Big Teef Records, secretly has feelings for Jaxx, a struggling music producer living in the Basement. As eviction looms, Jaxx strikes a dangerous deal with the Giant of Beanstalk Towers in the Penthouse.

The children meet the Landlord, who sends them on a mission: to find four gifts for his daughter Rap-on-Zel’s 18th birthday. In return, he promises a way out of the hood. They have just four days to find an iPhone as white as milk, a hoodie as red as blood, weave as yellow as corn, and trainers as pure as gold.

Synopsis

A fresh and funny hip hop twist on a classic fairy tale, Into the Hoods takes audiences on a journey through the Ruff Endz Estate. Packed with unforgettable characters, an electrifying soundtrack, and ZooNation’s signature storytelling through dance, it’s a modern fairytale like no other.

Background

The idea for Into the Hoods began in 2005 when ZooNation gained a place at The Place’s Hothouse course. Commissioned by Sadler’s Wells, the show premiered at the Peacock Theatre in 2006, returning that summer for a full week.

After a five-star sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe, the show was produced by Phil McIntyre Entertainment and went on to tour before opening in the West End in 2008. It became the first ever hip-hop dance show in the West End and one of its longest running dance productions, with a five?month run at the Novello Theatre. The cast won the 2009 What’s On Stage Theatregoers’ Choice Award for Best Ensemble Performance, while Kate Prince was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreographer.

Highlights included a special performance for Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations in Hyde Park in 2008, and successful revivals at the Southbank Centre in 2009 and 2010. In 2015, a remixed version toured the UK after opening again at the Peacock Theatre.
