Some Like It Hip Hop

ABOUT THE SHOW

Some Like It Hip Hop is a story of love, mistaken identity and revolution, in a city where books are banned, and where women are kept subservient to men.

Some Like It Hip Hop is a story of love, mistaken identity and revolution set in a city where books are banned and women are forced to live in submission.

When Jo?Jo and Kerri break the rules and are expelled from the city, they return disguised as men to prove their worth. Complications arise when Jo?Jo falls for Simeon, the city’s only educated man — if only she wasn’t wearing a moustache…

As they fight to maintain their disguise, keep their love secret, and challenge the oppressive regime, the stakes rise fast.

Synopsis

Blending ZooNation’s trademark hip hop, comedy and physical theatre, Some Like It Hip Hop draws inspiration from Some Like It Hot, Mad Men and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. It delivers a witty, high?energy exploration of gender stereotypes, mistaken identity, and the revolutionary power of love.

Background

Premiering in October 2011 at Sadler’s Wells’ Peacock Theatre, Some Like It Hip Hop was conceived, directed and choreographed by Kate Prince, with a standout cast including Lizzie Gough as Jo?Jo and Teneisha Bonner as Kerri.

It returned to the West End in 2012 and toured extensively across the UK to critical acclaim. In 2019, the production embarked on a major national tour, reaching audiences far beyond London.

In 2020, Some Like It Hip Hop was nominated for Best Dance Production at the Black British Theatre Awards.
